The ‘x’ of X:architecture/Art represents the crossover between art and architecture. Principal, Donna Schumacher is interested in the
potential of architecture to describe the narrative of human experience. Both her art and her architecture are focused on these concerns.
Architecture is the narrative we inhabit. It reflects our lives and our choices and values. Inevitably, an
architect is contacted because there has been a change. A baby is born, a new home is purchased, an organization
is forced to relocate. New beginnings are reflected in the design of the new space. X:a/A believes in the
active use of these stories in the creation of the design. Donna Schumacher works closely with the family or
organization to help them discover their individual story, their architecture, a space that reflects their unique
needs and relationships.
Donna Schumacher combines the practical experience of years as an architect with a creative spirit and willingness
to work collaboratively with her clients.
“I want to decipher the code; to make the unseen seeable, I know there is something else there, intertwined with
form is meaning. The conscious use of content in architecture allows for a critical assessment.”
The artwork of Donna Schumacher integrates architectural form with time based media to create a spatial experience in
which subliminal content is brought actively and tangibly to the surface.
My training in architecture informs my process as an artist. Concept is the starting point for the generation of form.
Beginning with a question and a personal history, I embark on a rigorous period of research. The investigations include
the creation of Collages and small fabrications to allow for an intuitive exploration while the writings help to
concretize the intellectual gestation for the material. These investigations culminate in the site specific installations
which are translations of the concepts into built form where they can be explore as a visceral and three dimensional experience.
